The Psychiatric Crisis Center (PCC) provides crisis intervention services seven days a week, twenty four hours a day for residents of the Mid-Willamette Valley, particularly Marion, Polk and Yamhill counties. It is located on the campus of Salem Hospital.
At least one Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP) is on duty at all times to provide face-to-face assessments and crisis counseling. We also provide telephone triage, support, and referral. This service is provided on a first come-first served basis. Most of this work is done at the crisis center itself, but a large number of assessments also occur at the emergency room of Salem Hospital
During peak demand times (usually early afternoons and evenings) as many as three QMHP's share the workload. At other times they are assisted by Qualified Mental Health Associates (QMHA's), who help gather information, monitor clients who are waiting to be seen, and provide support and practical assistance to clients who are waiting for the crisis plan that has been developed with them to be implemented (such as approval for hospitalization or for transportation to arrive).
PCC staff are responsible for authorizing services for clients in a mental health crisis, including regional inpatient hospitalization, crisis respite in the community, the use of crisis associates (paraprofessionals trained to support and give reassurance to persons in crisis), and access to basic needs support like medications, food, and other assistance. PCC staff also provide referrals to ongoing mental health services and other community resources.
Other crisis services offered by PCC include psychiatric time once a week for medication evaluations and a casemanager to temporarily assist clients who are at risk of hospitalization but do not have access to regular mental health services.
